National Die-In Day: US high schoolers to protest inaction on gun control

Students rally in front of the White House to protest gun violence in March. American high school students are organizing a National Die-In Day on 12 June to protest continued government inaction on gun control laws. The action will take place on the second anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, and will include a die-in at noon in front of the Capitol in Washington DC and another in Orlando.

One of the first victims of Texas school shooting rejected the suspect before the attack, mother claims

The mother of a student killed in a school shooting in Texas said her daughter had rejected the advances of suspected killer Dimitrios Pagourtzis, for four months prior to the attack. Mother Sadie Rodriguez told the Los Angeles Times in private messages that her daughter had embarrassed the 17-year-old suspect in class by finally standing up to him, after putting up with his “aggressive” advances for months. Multiple reports said the shooter focused on the art class where Shana had been, and many said he was taunting victims.

One-fingered Japanese climber dies on eighth attempt at Everest

A celebrated Japanese climber who lost all but one finger to frostbite on Everest has died on his eighth attempt to reach the summit, officials said Monday. Nobukazu Kuriki had fallen ill and was descending when his team lost contact with him. The 35-year-old is the third climber this month to perish on the world's highest peak.

Thousands of Moroccans protest against US Jerusalem embassy move

More than 10,000 Moroccans chanting "Death to Israel" took to the streets of Casablanca on Sunday to protest against the U.S. decision to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. The marchers carried Palestinian flags and placards that read "Al Quds (Jerusalem) Palestine's eternal capital". The United States opened its embassy in Jerusalem on May 14, moving it from Tel Aviv, a move that reversed decades of U.S. policy and delighted Israel and infuriated Palestinians.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has called off his re-election campaign's plans to raffle off a shotgun, in the aftermath of the school shooting that killed 10 people last week. The move came after 17-year-old high school student Dimitrios Pagourtzis was charged for gunning down fellow students and teachers at his rural school Friday in the conservative state. Gun ownership is a point of pride in Texas and legal restrictions on firearms are considered politically untenable.

Vietnam says Chinese bombers in disputed South China Sea increase tensions

Recent activity by China's strategic bombers in the South China Sea's Paracel Islands seriously violated Vietnam's sovereignty over the disputed territory, Vietnam's foreign ministry said on Monday. China's air force said bombers such as the H-6K had landed and taken off from islands and reefs in the South China Sea as part of training exercises last week. The flights "increase tensions, cause regional instabilities and are not good for maintaining a peaceful, stable and cooperative environment in the East Sea," foreign ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said in a statement, using the Vietnamese name for the South China Sea.

Arab Israelis in Haifa protest over Gaza killings

Hundreds of Arab Israelis demonstrated Saturday evening in Haifa in solidarity with Gaza, where more than 60 Palestinians have died from Israeli fire in recent days, an AFP reporter said. Protesters shouted "down with the occupation, stop fascism" and denounced the arrests Friday of 19 people in the northern city during a previous rally held in solidarity with Gaza residents. 'Alien' asteroid discovered orbiting the wrong way near Jupiter

An "alien" asteroid from another star system has been discovered sharing Jupiter's orbit. Through a telescope the asteroid look like every other in the solar system save for one crucial difference - it is travelling in the wrong direction. It is the first time an interstellar space rock has been found to be permanently residing in the solar system. Earlier this year, a tumbling cigar-shaped object named 'Oumuamua', hit the headlines after flying into earth's galactic backyard, but it merely passed through and out again. But the new 1.8 mile wide rock - code-named 2015 BZ509 - appears to be a long-term resident, according to a study in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The first clue that it was not a native of the solar system came from its "retrograde" orbit of the sun, the opposite the direction of travel taken by all the planets and almost every other object in our system. Scientists have concluded it survived by orbiting the sun exactly in step with Jupiter, but in the opposite direction Credit: NASA / ESA Dr Fathi Namouni, from the Cote d'Azur Observatory in France, lead author of the study, said: "How the asteroid came to move in this way while sharing Jupiter's orbit has until now been a mystery. "If 2015 BZ509 were a native of our system, it should have had the same original direction as all of the other planets and asteroids, inherited from the cloud of gas and dust that formed them." Scientists have concluded it survived by orbiting the sun exactly in step with Jupiter, but in the opposite direction. Co-author Dr Helena Morais, from the Estadual Paulista University in Brazil, said: "The close proximity of the stars, aided by the gravitational forces of the planets, help these systems attract, remove, and capture asteroids from one another." Computer simulations suggest that the asteroid made the jump to our solar system 4.5 billion years ago when the sun was part of a tightly packed star cluster. “That was completely unexpected...it means it is an alien to the solar system,” said Dr Namouni. Since asteroids and comets carry organic chemicals and water, the discovery could shed light on the origins of life on Earth, the scientists believe.
