Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday attended an Istanbul prayer service for former Egyptian leader Mohamed Morsi who died after collapsing during a trial hearing in a Cairo court. Erdogan, a key supporter of Morsi, joined the afternoon prayers at the historic Fatih mosque, an AFP photographer reported. Turkey's relations with Cairo deteriorated after the Egyptian military, then led by Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, ousted Morsi in 2013.

Google Appoints New Chief to Oversee Tumultuous China Region

(Bloomberg) -- Alphabet Inc.’s Google has appointed a new Greater China head, as the company tries to reset a checkered relationship with Beijing while tensions with Washington flare.Stanley Chen will become managing director of Greater China sales, the company said Monday, taking up a post Scott Beaumont vacated after he was appointed Google’s Asia-Pacific president in March. The incoming executive, who will be based in Shanghai, had been general manager of its Taiwan business for eight years.Google takes in about 15% of its annual revenue from the Asia Pacific even though it pulled its search engine from the world’s No. 2 economy around 2010, citing censorship. Advertising from Chinese companies however remains an important business for the internet giant.The company came under fire last year for an unsuccessful attempt to bring a censored version of its search engine back to China. Google has also figured prominently in the trade war as it contends with a ban on Huawei, one of its biggest advertisers and Android customers, and comes under scrutiny for its work on artificial intelligence in the country. LAPD investigates officer's actions in Costco shooting

The Los Angeles Police Department is gathering evidence and video footage in an administrative investigation into an off-duty officer who shot and killed a man authorities say attacked him inside a Southern California Costco Wholesale warehouse store. Two others were critically injured in the shooting in Corona, which is about 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Los Angeles. The officer opened fire after Kenneth French, 32, of Riverside, "assaulted" him "without provocation" as the officer held his young child, Corona police said Saturday.

It is the conclusion of expert analysis.”Roger Berkowitz, director of the Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities at Bard College, which focuses on the work of the Origins of Totalitarianism author who herself was in an internment camp during the Nazi regime, told The Independent that, “my own view is that the camps are designed to some degree to isolate, disempower, and dehumanise their inhabitants. Part of the intent is to deter future refugees.”“This is a humanitarian crisis and to that extent Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is right to sound the alarm about the camps as inconsistent with the ideals of the United States as a refuge for oppressed and poor people looking for a better life,” Mr Berkowitz continued. “Of course the United States has run concentration camps before, but these are moments in our history we should be embarrassed by. Qatar to distribute new Gaza aid funds: official

Gulf state Qatar is set to distribute more than $10 million in aid to thousands of cash-strapped Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, a Qatari official said on Monday. The money was brought into the Hamas-controlled enclave Sunday evening by the Qatari ambassador to Gaza and is expected to be distributed Monday or Tuesday, the official said on condition of anonymity. Another $15 million would be provided for infrastructure and cash-for-work projects, the official said.

Hong Kong protesters block road outside Carrie Lam's office to demand she step down

Thousands of protesters laid siege to the Hong Kong Chief Executive’s office on Monday in the latest escalation of a long-running standoff with the government over a controversial new extradition law. The mostly young demonstrators closed down a main road near the city’s waterfront as they stood outside Carrie Lam’s office and called for her to resign and scrap the bill which would allow suspects to be sent to mainland China for trial in its opaque justice system. Dressed in the black and sheltering from heavy rain under colourful umbrellas, the determined remnant from a march of an estimated two million people on Sunday threatened to block the road until the law was withdrawn. The latest demonstration added to the growing pressure on Ms Lam to step down over her poor handling of Hong Kong’s biggest political crisis since its handover to China in 1997. On Monday Lu Kang, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, said Beijing would continue to support the embattled leader. However, a senior Hong Kong government official revealed that China, which would lose face over her resignation after handpicking Ms Lam for the job, would not let her leave the post even if she wanted to. “It’s not going to happen,” the official told Reuters. Bonnie Leung, a leader of the Civil Human Rights Front – one of the main groups behind the mass rallies – told The Telegraph that Mr Wong’s involvement could help elevate the flourishing campaign “to the next level,” especially among the younger generation who were inspired by his activism. “I believe that Joshua Wong coming back and joining this campaign will only encourage people to persist and to throw out more great and creative ideas,” she said. But Ms Leung added that international pressure was also crucial for the movement’s survival. “Concern from all around the world is important because this is for justice, for freedom, and people need to speak up for these values,” she said.

U.S. Will Send 1,000 More Troops to Middle East Amid Iran Tensions

The Trump administration plans to send 1,000 more troops as well as additional military resources to the Middle East as tensions with Iran continue to simmer, the Defense Department announced Monday."In response to a request from the US Central Command for additional forces, and with the advice of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and in consultation with the White House, I have authorized approximately 1,000 additional troops for defensive purposes to address air, naval, and ground-based threats in the Middle East," read a statement from acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan."United States does not seek conflict with Iran," Shanahan said, but he highlighted recent threatening behavior by the state terror sponsor that could endanger U.S. forces."The recent Iranian attacks validate the reliable, credible intelligence we have received on hostile behavior by Iranian forces and their proxy groups that threaten United States personnel and interests across the region," the defense secretary said.Last month, the Trump administration deployed four bombers as well as the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier-strike group to the Persian Gulf amid fears that Iran was transporting short-range ballistic missiles in the region.Meanwhile, two oil tankers were apparently attacked in the Gulf of Oman last week, suffering a series of explosions that injured crew members. The U.S. Navy responded to the disaster offering assistance.Iran’s supreme leader also said this month that the U.S. would be powerless to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons should it so desire and said no further negotiations with American leaders are forthcoming."The action today is being taken to ensure the safety and welfare of our military personnel working throughout the region and to protect our national interests," Shanahan said. China earthquake kills 13, injures 199

The toll from a strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake in southwest China rose to 13 dead and 199 injured on Tuesday as rescuers pulled bodies and survivors from wrecked buildings. More than 8,000 people were relocated as a large number of structures were damaged or collapsed after the quake struck late Monday near Yibin, in Sichuan province, according to the city government. Other images were of a woman being helped out of another collapsed structure.
